Age Groups

The information below is for all Nippers and their families.

We hope you and your child enjoy the Bay and Basin Community Nipper Club experience, our aim is to facilitate “Safe Family Fun Days” for all to enjoy.

Please review, retain and act on the information below.

  • The age group that your child will be in will be according to their age on the 30th of September.

Eg 1); If your child is 5 on the 14th of July they will be in the Under 6 age group.

Eg 2) If your child is 6 on the 20th of October (after the cut off date) they will also be in the Under 6 age group.

  • Parents/carers are required to be present and available throughout the nippers program
  • Parents/carers may be asked to assist Age Managers from time to time during activities in and around the water.
  • All children must be signed in by a parent/carer at the start and signed out by a parent/carer. You must advise the Age Manager of you need to leave early.
  • All Nippers are to line up at their Age Group flag at the start of Nippers and are required to return to the flag at the end before going with their parents/carers.
  • All Nippers need to wear their Bay and Basin Nippers rash shirt and have sunscreen applied prior to the start of Nippers.
  • All nippers need to wear their age group cap during Nippers. This cap must be removed at the end of Nippers.
  • Parents/carers are encouraged to wear their swimmers to be prepared to join in the fun.

Preliminary swims undertaken by Nippers at the Registration day

Under 6 and Under 7 No preliminary swim
Under 8 – 25m (any stroke) + 1min float
Under 9 – 25m (any stroke) + 1min float
Under 10 – 25m (Freestyle) + 1.5min float
Under 11 – 50m (Freestyle) + 2min float
Under 12 – 100m (Freestyle) + 2min float
Under 13 – 150m (Freestyle) + 3min float
Under 14 – 200m in 5min + 3 min float

Under 6’s

Welcome to the Bay and Basin Community Nippers Club and we hope you enjoy your first season at Nippers.

Surf Play 1:  Surf Play is the program designed for the most junior members. The focus is on play, participation and fun. Activities and games will be the focus of the sessions with a number of simple beach safety and awareness lessons available such as: basic safety practices during activities, what makes up a beach environment, sunsmart guidelines, the importance of having an adult with them at the beach, what a lifesaver is and what they do, wading, beach sprinting and beach flags.

 

Under 7’s

This season your Under 7 Nipper will continue in their journey of water confidence by completing the Surf Play 2 program.

Next season your Nipper will be in the Under 8s. This will be the first year that they will need to complete a junior preliminary skills evaluation prior to the start of the Nipper season. They will need to be able to swim 25m of any stroke and complete a 1min survival float. Please support your Nipper over the winter months by encouraging them to practice their swimming so they are ready and confident to complete this swim.

 

Under 8’s

Under 8s is an exciting year for Nippers as they will now be working toward a formal Surf Life Saving Junior Development award (Surf Aware 1) and will increase the amount of time they spend in the water learning skills such as board paddling.

This is the first year that your nipper will need to complete a junior preliminary skills evaluation. This consists of 25m swim (any stroke) plus a 1min survival float. This will be completed in a 25m pool.

 

Under 9’s

Preliminary Skills Evaluation Swim: 25m swim (any stroke). 1min survival float

Award:  Surf Aware 2-
Under 9s will further develop their skills on the board and in the water in general. Learn how to recognise different wave types and dangers that can be present to swimmers. They will participate in a  first aid workshop and basic survival and rescue skills.

Next season your Nipper will be in the Under 10s. The Under 10s Preliminary Skills evaluation changes slightly. Next season they will be required to complete a 25m swim using Freestyle and a 1.5min survival float. Please support your nipper during the winter months to practice their Freestyle so they will be confident and ready for this preliminary skills evaluation swim.

 

Under 10’s

Preliminary Skills Evaluation Swim: 25m swim (Freestyle). 1.5min survival float

The Under 10 Nippers will extend their first aid and rescue knowledge/skills with training that will give them an understanding and practical application of the basic principles of resuscitation and assisting a distressed swimmer. The award is Surf Safe 1

 

Under 11’s

Preliminary Skills Evaluation Swim:  50m swim (Freestyle).  2 min survival float

Award:  Surf Safe 2

Learning Outcomes for Surf Safe 2

Surf Conditions and Hazards Lesson: ‘Risky business.’ Recognise ‘at risk’ people in a beach environment.  Identify actions that can be taken to help ‘at risk’ people avoid dangerous situations.

First Aid Lesson: ‘Here to help.’ Identify the principles of DRABCD. Recognise and manage patients suffering from cuts and abrasions, bleeding from the nose, sprained muscle ligaments  and sunburn.

Resuscitation Lesson: ‘The breath of life.’ Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques.

Signs and Signals Lesson: ‘Sign language.’ Recognise the importance of beach safety signage. Identify and understand safety signage on their beach.

Board: Entering and Exiting the Surf Lesson: ‘Up and out.’ Attempt or perform a dismount from a nipper board.

Board: Catching Waves Lesson: ‘The easy way in.’ Attempt or perform catching a wave on a nipper board.

Board: Board Relay Lesson: ‘Never board in a team.’ Attempt or perform a board relay race.

Swim: Negotiating the Surf Lesson: ‘I’m a fish!’ Understand the techniques of surf swimming. Demonstrate an ability to swim through surf, parallel to surf and back to shore.

Beach Sprint: Starts and Finishes Lesson: ‘Up and at em.’ Attempt or perform a crouching beach sprint start. Attempt or perform a beach sprint finish.

Multi Discipline: Transitions Lesson: ‘Round we go.’ Attempt or perform an ironman/woman race transitions. Attempt or perform cameron relay race transitions.

 

Under 12’s

Preliminary Skills Evaluation Swim: 100m swim (Freestyle). 2 min survival float

Award:  Surf Smart 1

Learning Outcomes for Surf Smart 1

Surf Conditions and Hazards Lesson: ‘Rip it up.’ Identify the four different types of rip currents.  Identify how to manage rips in a beach environment. Identify how to use rip currents to assist in surf swimming   and rescues.

First Aid Lesson: ‘A helping hand.’ Identify the principles of DRABCD. Recognise and manages patients suffering from cramping, fainting and shock.

Resuscitation Lesson: ‘Giving hope.’ Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques.

Signs and Signals Lesson: ‘Sign me up.’ Demonstrate the following signals: message understood; attract   attention; message not clear, repeat; pick up swimmers.

Patrols Lesson: ‘On patrol,’ Identify the role of a beach patrol. Identify the role of lifesavers during a patrol.

Board: Negotiating the Surf Lesson: ‘Off and under.’ Attempt or perform rolling under a wave on a board.

Board: Board Rescue Lesson: ‘Ride with me.’ Recognise how a board can be used to secure and support a conscious patient. Demonstrate the skills required to secure and support a conscious patient.

Swim: Negotiating the Surf Lesson: ‘The big stuff.’ Attempt or perform diving under waves.

Beach Sprint: Technique Lesson: ‘Hard and fast.’ Develop a beach sprint arm and leg drive technique.

Beach Flags: Strategy Lesson: ‘Hustle and Bustle.’ Identify different beach flags race strategies.

 

Under 13’s

Preliminary Skills Evaluation Swim: 150m swim (Freestyle). 3 min survival float

 First Aid Lesson: ‘Patched up.’ Identify the principles of DRABCD. Recognise and manage basic patient management techniques.

Resuscitation Lesson: ‘Life is for living.’ Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques.

Interpersonal Communication Lesson: ‘Make it known.’  Recognise the importance of communicating with beach users.  Identify ways to communicate with beach users.

Patrols Lesson: ‘All in this together.’ Identify volunteer and professional emergency services in the local area.

Board: Event Lesson: ‘Board race / Board rescue.’ Demonstrate board skills in a board race event.  Demonstrate board rescue skills in a board rescue event.

Swim: Event Lesson: ‘Surf Race / Run-Swim-Run.’ Demonstrate surf swimming skills in a surf race event. Demonstrate surf swimming and beach running skills in a run-swim-run event.

Swim: Tube Rescue Lesson: ‘Rescue me’ Attempt or perform swimming in surf with a rescue tube.  Attempt or perform a tube rescue for a swimmer in distress.

Beach Sprint: Event Lesson: ‘Beach Sprint / Beach Relay.’ Demonstrate beach sprinting skills in a beach sprint event. Demonstrate beach sprinting skills in a beach relay event.

Beach Flags: Event Lesson: ‘Beach Flags.’ Demonstrate beach flags skills in a beach flags event.

Multi Discipline: Event Lesson: ‘Ironperson / Cameron Relay.’ Demonstrate beach running, surf swimming and board skills in an Ironman/Ironwoman event. Demonstrate beach running or surf swimming or board skills in a  cameron relay event.
